5 ways to use LinkedIn to get a job

Keep your profile up to date

LinkedIn members that have a profile picture are 14 times more likely to receive page views, while those who post skills are 13 times more likely to have profile views compared to those who don’t per LinkedIn’s blog. LinkedIn has over 45,000 skills for you to choose from. Make the most of this and get noticed by potential employers by regularly updating your profile, add a profile picture, and make sure you include specific skills to stand out from the crowd.

Be precise about your current skills and objectives

When you are using LinkedIn to find a job opportunity, make sure you don’t leave anything out about your current skills and objectives. Include your current skills and objectives in your ‘About’ section and make sure you have updated your ‘Experience’ section on your profile so recruiters and hiring managers can get a real sense of your experience straight away.

Update your headline

Your photo, name and headline (which is listed below your photo) are the only items people see when they search. Your headline needs to stand out and highlight what you do or what type of position you are looking for. Use headlines that are clear and grab attention.

Let people know you are available

Let recruiters and hiring managers know that you are open to opportunities by including this in your headline and add the LinkedIn ‘Open to Work’ badge to your profile picture to get noticed quicker. If you can, write a post stating that you are looking for a new job as one of your connections may know of an opportunity that would be perfect for you and you may grab the attention of a recruiter or hiring manager.

Build your network

Make the most of LinkedIn by building your connections. Having a strong network on LinkedIn will increase your exposure. LinkedIn makes it easy to connect with people you know by importing your contact list from other sites such as Gmail. It would also be useful to connect with others that work in your industry. When you send a connection request always make sure you add a personalised message as this will increase the chance of your invitation being accepted.
